I must admit that I did regret a little after starting this ‘challenge’ and giving myself (and those who participated) such a short deadline. This ‘fun’ challenge requires shooting 36 different themes (set by myself) in 36 exposures in a roll of film. What made things tougher was that the themes were to be shot following the sequence of the list I set … and a crazy 2 weeks deadline made things tougher for those who lead a pretty busy life like myself. Hahaha. Anyway … after some struggling … I managed to finish them all in a couple of hours.
These were taken at a short trip to Little India after my recent sunrise shoot. This is actually my 2nd roll for this challenge and … I actually shot 3 rolls in total! So what happened to the other two? I’ll write a bit about that at the end of this blog entry.
Camera : Holga 120N , Film : Long expired Kodak Gold 200
The first theme was ‘Myself’. So I tried to take a self portrait and wonder if you can see me in the photo below …
Myself
Okay … if you can’t see me in the photo above … you are perfectly normal. Haha. What happened was I screwed up! I accidentally opened the back cover of the Holga’s 35mm adapter back and there goes the first couple of frames.
Sound
‘Sound’ looks kinda crazy … definitely because of the leaks ‘overflowed’ when I opened up the back. Luckily the subjects are still a little visible. 😛
Up
Light leaks from the screwup still partially visible in ‘Up’ but I kinda like it.
Move
Trying to do panning using a Holga is pretty crazy, so I decided a multi-exposure will be easier to present the theme ‘Move’.
Colours
Technology
Not a very good subject to represent the theme but … I was lazy 😛
Path
Windows
I didn’t cheat. There are really windows in the photo above. Right? Why it turned out like this was because out of a sudden some pigeons flew my direction and I couldn’t resist taking a shot of them. Oh well … at least I captured one of them in flight … and of course the bonus (phew!) was the existence of windows in the image.
Signs
Lazy again …………………………
Liquid
This was a planned shot. I was dead thirsty (blame the mad super duper hot weather) and waited til this theme before heading for the still to grab a Coke.
Time
Originally planned to photograph some clocks in a shop in Little India but those guys in the shop looked fierce. I chickened out and photographed and easier subject.
Shake
This theme ain’t hard because it’s kinda easy to replicate how my vision is after a night of boozing …
Food
Errrmmm … food. By now you probably know how lazy I was in trying to complete this challenge.
Chaos
Screwed up. I took few exposures hoping that it will create a mess but those darn gourds seem to be the ‘main attraction’. Duh! Oh my gourd!!!
Peace
I remember by the time I got to this theme … I felt like giving up. The sun was out to fry me like an egg and I wished I went home directly after the sunrise shoot (woke up at 5am!). Anyway …
Nature
Can loitering pigeons be considered ‘nature’?
Analogue
Analogue. Bicycle. One of my favourite shots from this roll.
Fruits
Aged
I admit that I didn’t really notice those light bulbs when I took this shot. Hahaha. They somehow takes away the ‘aged’ feel of the street lamp. There were many other subjects that could fit this theme but … nevemind.
Idol
Round
Do ya think I’m hopelessly lazy by now? Muwahahaha!
Patterns
Two
The ‘lamest’ shot of all … but then … there are two bins and it fits the theme!
Red
Her
The weather was too damn hot to have any hot babes loitering at Little India that late morning … so I was really glad I came across this.
Lines
Home
Home to most of us in Singapore … easy theme 😛
Box
I am a simple minded person … so there is no need to try be creative or artistic. A box is a box. Hehe.
Comfortable
A hotel that normally I’d think to be pretty lousy (or sleazy?) suddenly seemed comfortable to me. I wished I could just run in for a cold shower and change of clothes … and some icy cold beer!
Lock
Shaky looking lock. My favourite shot from this roll!!!
Double
Shapes
Floor
Mess
Ain’t as messy as I hope it will turn out. Anyway … I was glad the roll was coming to an end!
Sky
Ermm … don’t look at the tree and just concentrate on the sky. It’s still the sky. I told myself to quickly fire the last shot and leave.
Last
Walking to the carpark feeling like a bacon just out from a hot pan … I turned back for the last shot. Finally it’s over! Yahoo!!!!!!
So that’s all. My 36 shots using the 36 themes I set to torture myself. Hahaha. I know they ain’t nothing great but I am so glad I made it to completing the challenge. The last two weeks were crazy because not only I didn’t have much time to go out shooting … Fitzand was not feeling well and I spent two days staying home to take care of him. Deadline was drawing near and I’ve to fly to Vietnam on a business trip on the 15th June which is the deadline for this challenge. Having to finish the roll, scan it and prepare to upload and update my blog is quite a challenge.
Ooops! Almost forgot to write a bit on how the hell I ended up shooting 3 rolls for this challenge. First roll was shot using a SLR with Lensbaby lens attached to it. It was a weekend and I challenged myself to finish shooting the 36 themes in 30 minutes at home! Madness! But … I did it! I finished shooting the roll in 30 minutes … but … but … unfortunately that roll ended up in the bin. It was a roll of Tunsten film and it turned out really terribly grainy … so bad that I didn’t even wanna look at it. Duh!
The 2nd roll is this one from a short (and darn hot) walk in Little India. The 3rd roll was something I did for fun but ended up having to abandon it. It was not screwed up. It was a bit too perfect. I shot it using a Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.4 lens on my SLR and the results seemed a but too nice for my liking. Hahaha. No … I’m not crazy!
Will I ever wanna set such a challenge again? You bet I will but … let me take a break and drink some beer first … okay?
I’m pretty satisfied with this roll because firstly … it’s been quite a while since I’ve used my Holga and this was a good chance to excercise it … and secondly … it was all done in an hour and a half.
U shall name this 36frame theme in India…. LOL
i love your ANALOGUE … and your view of HER…. really interesting…. good set…
so interesting to see all the theme in 1 place(INDIA). ROCKz
1 trip and u finish the roll! pro!
and ur choice of camera and film…. indeed a true toy camera fanatic!! I would be too afraid to use a holga with a ‘Long expired Kodak Gold 200’ !!! for a project like that. just too afraid that I’ll scerw up all the shots.
kudos
@ymmij : Thanks. Well I was lazy and wanted to do something ‘unplugged’ and get them all back to basics with just a simple camera. Luckily all of them turned out pretty okay.
Wah….. I wanna see the too perfect roll!!!!!!!!!!
Master keep challenging himself. I would have gone bonkers with a nervous breakdown to do it in a day.
Have to learn those double exposure shots from you. Mine always blow!
oh my gourd 😛
again, very very interesting (:
